During the sweltering summer days, stray animals face harsh conditions without the comfort of shelter, food, or water. One woman caught sight of a mysterious creature on a hillside near her California home, initially mistaking it for a coyote. After three days of keen observation, she realized it was a desperately abandoned dog matching one posted on the Nextdoor app.

The poor animal was clearly suffering from the heat and exhaustion. As time went by, neighbors noticed this dog wandering around the area, but nobody reported it missing. The concerned woman decided to take action and reached out to a local rescuer, Suzette Hall, for help.

Hall recounted to The Dodo, “It was so hot that day. I was feeling so dizzy, but I thought, ‘She’s gotta be hotter’.” Despite the challenging terrain, Hall was determined to reach the dog. With the help of kind neighbors, she managed to access the hillside from their yard.

Climbing up the steep slope, Hall finally spotted the dog hiding near some bushes. The animal was in a dire state, having not had water for days. Hall set up a trap with treats and a large bowl of water, which the dog drank almost immediately. However, it took hours of patience and coaxing to get the dog into the trap.

A Heartfelt Rescue

“I put the chicken in the trap and started to walk away and … I heard the trap shut. I turned around and started crying,” Hall shared in a Facebook post. The rescue was exceptionally tough due to the location, leaving Hall both emotional and exhausted.

Upon closer inspection, Hall discovered the dog was a young Belgian Malinois puppy around seven months old. Unable to carry the trap down the hill herself, Hall called for help. Four compassionate firefighters came to their aid, finally rescuing the puppy from the relentless sun.

Hall named the puppy Sunshine, reflecting the intense heat of the day and the pup’s bright spirit. The name seemed fitting for her radiant personality and hopeful future. Sunshine’s fearful demeanor indicated a rough past, but Hall was confident she would soon become a beacon of joy.

Sunshine was taken to a vet in Irvine, where she began to decompress. The veterinary staff showered her with affection, helping rebuild her trust in humans. Through their efforts, Sunshine started to feel safe again.

After her recovery, Sunshine moved to a wonderful foster home with Brittany, an exceptional dog trainer. Brittany’s expertise was exactly what Sunshine needed, and their bond grew stronger by the day. This transition marked the beginning of a brighter future for Sunshine.

It wasn’t long before Brittany decided she couldn’t part with Sunshine. “Originally was fostering, but when she walked up to me and gave me my first kiss, it was a wrap and I asked to adopt her,” Brittany shared. Sunshine had found her forever home.

Now, Sunshine is cherished and spoiled, enjoying her days alongside her furry big sister, Akeela. The once-lost puppy has transformed into a beloved family member, basking in the love and care she always deserved.
