The Discovery
A terrified pup was found curled up behind a dumpster in an alley in St. Louis, Missouri. A Good Samaritan, unable to ignore the dog’s plight, contacted Stray Rescue of St. Louis for assistance. Donna Lochmann and her team immediately responded to the call, ready to help.
Upon arrival, the team saw the dog, later named Joan of Bark, trying to hide. Her eyes, filled with sorrow and fear, revealed the depth of her suffering. She was quiet and appeared to have accepted her grim fate.
Lochmann approached Joan of Bark, speaking softly to her. The dog’s gaze shifted, locking onto Lochmann. Her beautiful but sorrowful eyes seemed to plead for help, even though she didn’t know how to ask for it.
Lochmann sat next to Joan of Bark, offering her Vienna sausages. The hungry pup quickly ate the meal, albeit with uncertainty. The bond of trust was beginning to form, but more work was needed to bring her to safety.
Bringing Her To Safety
After a while, Lochmann gently placed a leash around Joan of Bark’s neck. The frightened dog hesitated, but Lochmann patiently gave her time. When the pup finally stood up, the reason for her fear became clear: one of her back legs was broken.
The rescue team felt a pang of sadness, suspecting she had been hit by a car. They lured Joan of Bark into a crate, reassuring her that she was now safe. “It’s okay, baby, you are safe now! We got you,” they shared on Facebook.
Joan of Bark was rushed to the clinic, where the vet examined her and took X-rays. The kind staff also gave her a soothing bath, which the pup loved. Her eyes, now filled with gratitude, watched her caregivers with trust.
Despite the vet team’s efforts to save her leg, it had to be amputated due to the severity of the injury. After a successful surgery, the brave dog began her journey to recovery, showing remarkable resilience.
Receiving A Lot Of Love
Once healed, Joan of Bark was moved to a shelter. No longer in pain, she embraced the love showered upon her by her rescuers. She enjoyed cuddling with them, savoring every moment of affection.
Their love gave her hope that she would one day find a family that would love her unconditionally. Despite being a tripod, Joan of Bark enjoyed her life, especially doing zoomies in the yard.
The St. Louis rescue placed her in a wonderful foster home. Initially timid, Joan of Bark quickly settled in. Her foster family treated her with affection, and she cherished the warmth and comfort of her new environment.
Joan of Bark made friends with her furry foster sister and loved spending time with her. She began searching for her forever family, hoping to find a home where she would be loved as she deserved.
The Hope for a Forever Home
Joan of Bark’s journey from a terrified pup behind a dumpster to a beloved foster pet is a testament to her resilience and the power of compassion. Her foster family provided her with the love and care she needed to heal both physically and emotionally.
While it’s unclear if she has found her forever home yet, Joan of Bark continues to search for a family that will love her unconditionally. Such a lovely pup is sure to win the hearts of her future parents.
Joan of Bark’s story is a reminder of the importance of rescue organizations and the impact they can have on an animal’s life. Her transformation from a scared, injured dog to a happy, hopeful pup is truly inspiring.
As Joan of Bark waits for her forever family, she continues to thrive in her foster home, surrounded by love and care. Her story is a beacon of hope for all rescue animals.

Beautiful story, but I wish people would be more responsible with their pets. It’s heartbreaking to see animals suffer like this. 😢
