Kristie And Beau
Kristie Pereira was thrilled when she adopted Beau, a delightful hound-mix puppy, from a shelter in Northern Virginia. She cherished every moment with her new companion, enjoying countless fun-filled days and cozy naps together.
However, after a few months, Kristie noticed a change in Beau’s behavior. Concerned, she took him to the vet, who suggested possible neurological issues and prescribed medication. The vet advised a visit to the emergency room if Beau’s condition did not improve.
Sadly, Beau’s health did not get better. Kristie took him to an ER in Montgomery County, Maryland, where she received the same dire news: Beau had serious health problems. The vet mentioned expensive and invasive tests that were unlikely to help and suggested euthanasia as an option.
Heartbroken, Kristie made the agonizing decision to take Beau to Montgomery County Animal Services for euthanasia.
Shocking Discovery
Animal Services policy did not allow Kristie to be present during the procedure, so she tearfully said her goodbyes and handed Beau over. “I don’t think that someone just wanting to get rid of their dog would feel the way I felt,” Kristie shared with Fox 32.
Fox 32 reported that the form Kristie filled out included a box indicating a request for humane euthanasia, but also stated that the service could treat and rehome the pet if deemed treatable.
After evaluation, it was found that Beau had a liver issue. Instead of euthanasia, he received treatment and was sent back to his original shelter in Northern Virginia, without Kristie’s knowledge.
Still grieving, Kristie was shocked to see a Facebook post about a puppy up for adoption that looked exactly like Beau. She couldn’t believe her eyes.
Emotional Rollercoaster
Confused and overwhelmed, Kristie told the news, “An emotional rollercoaster, to say the least… He was like my little baby.” Montgomery County Animal Services explained that they only contact owners if euthanasia does not occur and if the owner calls expressing regret.
Kristie remembered being told that if the vets found a major health issue, euthanasia was the recommended option, leaving her to make a heart-wrenching choice.
The adoption organization acknowledged her pain but emphasized their strict policy of not returning surrendered pets to former owners. This was the case with Beau.
Despite the misunderstanding, Kristie’s love for Beau remains unwavering, and she hopes his new journey will be filled with the love and care he deserves.

This is so messed up! How can they have a policy that doesn’t return pets to their owners? 😡

I can’t stop thinking about Beau’s journey. So many twists and turns! Glad he’s okay, but poor Kristie. 😔

I’m confused. If they treated Beau, why didn’t they let Kristie know? This policy needs a serious update.

OMG, this is so crazy! How could they not inform her that Beau was still alive? Unbelievable!

Such a touching story! I can’t imagine the pain Kristie went through. Thank you for sharing. 💕

Did they even try to contact Kristie before deciding not to euthanize Beau? That seems really unfair.

Wow, what a rollercoaster of emotions for Kristie! So glad to hear Beau got the treatment he needed, but heartbreaking for her. 😢
